A Learning DisabilityDisabilityA physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on an individual’s ability to do normal daily activities. Register (LDR) is run by the NHS, as a list kept by your GP surgery for people with learning disabilities. The LDR allows people to get tailored health support, like free annual health checks from age 14, flu jabs, and adjustments for appointments (longer slots, quiet rooms) to ensure better, more accessible healthcare. Being on the register helps GPs identify vulnerable patients, share info with other health pros, and offer a Health Action Plan to manage specific health needs, making it easier to stay well.
You can join the register at any age from birth onwards. Joining the register could also mean you can have a free Annual Health Check.
The LDR inclusion Tool – Carers guide explains why the learning disability register, annual health checks, and health action plans are important. It also explains how you can help make sure the people you support get the health services they are entitled to.
Mencap have got some useful guides. The guides include a template letter that you can use to join the register.
